What began in 1966 as a forum for creating socio-economic awareness and encouraging the spirit of enterprise is today, a dynamic organization for the empowerment of women.
The Wing was inaugurated in 1966 by late Lady Dhanawanti Rama Rau, eminent social worker. The first President of IMC Ladies’ Wing was Ms. Zarine Cooper.
The Ladies’ Wing is an amalgamation of elite and progressive thinking women comprising of entrepreneurs, professionals, corporate leaders, academicians, bankers, journalists, artists, social activists and home makers who interact on variety of subjects from politics and economics to culture and development of the country.
The Wing organizes wide ranging events – seminars, conferences, industry visits, international delegations, interactive meetings with politicians, bureaucrats and others leading personalities. Eminent dignitaries like Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Dr. Omkar Goswami, Mr. Deepak Parekh, Shri. Nani Palkhivala, Dr. Kiran Bedi, Ms. Sushma Swaraj, Justice B N Srikrishna, His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama, Ms. Nita Ambani, Ms. Meera Sanyal, Ms. Priya Dutt, Ms. Sudha Murthy has addressed the Wing.
Educational and industrial visits are organised by the Wing to give exposure to aspiring entrepreneurs and to imbibe practical aspects of business. Business delegations are taken abroad and the Wing also hosts delegations from different countries. The Wing have visited Jakarta, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, Taipei, Hong Kong, Thailand and built new businesses and augmented the existing ones.
As part of its entrepreneurial development endeavour, the Wing holds an exhibition and sale, entitled Women Entrepreneurs Exhibition held in Mumbai and Delhi every year.
To provide platform to Indian Women Entrepreneurs to tap international markets with their creative talents and innovative designs “Call of the Peacock”, was initiated and hosted by the wing in Singapore, London, Dubai, Hong Kong and South Africa.
Impact is an initiative of the Ladies’ Wing to recognize and celebrate the social, economic and political achievements of women. For several years, the Ladies’ Wing has organized conclaves exploring varied themes through panel discussions and seminars in the areas of law, media, culture, business, health and rural development.
Every year the wing honors a woman from a selected field for her substantial work and contribution which has led to rural, social and economical empowerment and development of the society.
IMC Ladies’ Wing Jankidevi Bajaj Puraskar is an Annual presentation of an award to a woman rural entrepreneur from a nationwide search for her selfless and enterprising contribution towards rural business entrepreneurship. This is rewarded with a substantial cash amount for the recipient.
IMC Ladies’ Wing Woman of the Year Award is presented every year to honor a woman from a selected field for her substantial work and contribution which has led to empowerment and development of the society.
IMC Ladies’ Wing Award in the field of Banking and Financial Services is presented every alternate year to acknowledge and respect the contribution of a woman in the field of finance, banking and related services.
Over the years, IMC Ladies’ Wing has worked towards collecting funds for the benefit of the less privileged. Countless NGOs within the city have reaped the benefits of the profits gained by the Ladies’ Wing through their many activities. The focus of the Wing has been in particular to promote and support the girl child, education, women empowerment, healthcare and rural development. It is encouraging to see these NGOs grow from strength to strength through the efforts of the Wing.
Times have changed for enterprising women and the Ladies’ Wing, one of the most dynamic organizations in India, is a true reflection of her changing status in the business world.
