The Book Club of the Ladies’ Wing invites you to its third meeting at which we will be discussing the short spy story, Giulia Lazzari, by the very well-known British writer, W. Somerset Maugham.
The story is part of a collection of loosely linked stories titled Ashenden. Although they are works of fiction, they draw upon the author's experience as a member of the British Intelligence in Europe during World War 1. (Winston Churchill reportedly advised Maugham to burn fourteen other related stories that he had written!)
The Indian Nationalist Virendranath Chattopadhyay (nickname “Chatto”), who worked subversively from distant European shores, and whom the British Intelligence attempted to assassinate, was the inspiration for Chandra Lal in Giulia Lazzari. Like most Maugham stories this one also has an ending with a twist.
Do join us to discuss this fascinating story!
The printout of the story is available at the IMC Ladies’ Wing office, you may get it collected from the office from Monday to Friday between 10 am to 7 pm, if you would prefer a soft copy, please mail us on ladieswing@imcnet.org / lw@imcnet.org.

Surrogacy as an alternate means of having a child has gained much popularity in last few years.
This popularity has lead the Honourable Ministry of Home Affairs to issue guidelines in 2012 and a bill is likely to be placed in winter session of the parliament addressing various issues regarding surrogacy. With reasonable costs and lack of adequate governing laws, India has emerged as growing place for surrogacy. It is believed that costs in India are 1/3rd the costs in UK.
Surrogacy has specially become popular in homosexual couples and single parents across the world. However, several questions arises such as right of the child, surrogate mother and parents, right of the surrogate child to citizenship in foreign country and many many more. Mr. Amit Karkhanis, one of the foremost lawyers in India, will explain and address various issues relating to Surrogacy.
Mr. Karkhanis heads the firm Kay Legal and Associates LLP having over 12 years of Corporate Legal experience in the major practice areas of the firm. He holds a three year law degree (L.L.B) and a Masters of Law (L.L.M) in International Trade Laws from University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom.
He also has an extensive experience in the areas of Medico legal Laws, Surrogacy and Civil Laws, with an in-depth understanding of the legal and regulatory jurisprudence and practice in this niche area.
